How was Matariki first created? When Ranginui ,the sky father and papatuanuku , the earth mother were separated by their children the god of the winds,Called tawhirimatea got incredibly angry, so angry that he ripped out his own eyes and threw them into the heavens. In maori the name for matariki means ‘little eyes’ or ‘Eyes of god’.
Why is Matariki important?A lot of kiwis look forward to matariki. But some people celebrate a different star to know when winter is close by or is already here and also to restart the maori calendar.Sometimes you often don't see the stars so some New Zealanders celebrate it with their own traditions. But now everyone celebrates Matariki
